Fellowships
The Margaret and Herman Sokol Fellowship was established in 1983 and is awarded annually to an advanced graduate student in the doctoral phase of studies in chemistry at New York University. Recipients of the $10,000 award are selected on the basis of academic excellence and financial need and are chosen after a rigorous review process, focusing on grades and research accomplishments. The late Margaret Sokol was a member of the Board of Overseers of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, and the late Dr. Herman Sokol was one of the outstanding graduates of the Department of Chemistry. Over the years, the fellowship they funded has made possible the support of a series of highly distinguished doctoral candidates. The Margaret and Herman Sokol Postdoctoral Fellowship was established in 1991 and is awarded to support research for an exceptional graduate in the sciences. Students are given a $10,000 grant for postdoctoral research at any institution, including NYU.
The MacCracken Fellowship Program offers up to five-years of support, including a $20,000 stipend, full-tuition and fees, an award for the cost of NYU health insurance, and a one-time $1,000 dean’s supplementary fellowship grant for start-up research and educational expenses. The award includes teaching experience for a minimum of two semesters.
The Dean’s Dissertation Fellowship is awarded in a competition run by the GSAS Office of Academic and Student Life each fall semester. It is intended for advanced graduate students who expect to complete their dissertation the following year. It is awarded based on academic excellence and demonstrated superior progress and achievements in research. In years past, the Chemistry Department has had at least one of its students receive this award. Last fall, two Chemistry students received this award.
The Kramer Fellowship is based on superior academic and research performance and is restricted to U.S. permanent residents. The competition for this fellowship is open to any students who have completed their first year of graduate studies.
Teaching Awards
Each year, the chemistry department presents teaching awards to its outstanding graduate student teaching assistants. Chemistry Department Excellence in Teaching Awards reflect the student's consistently outstanding performance as an instructor. Recipients have exhibited not only the ability to effectively communicate knowledge, but also an admirable dedication to the students and to the department. TA's are rewarded from across the various disciplines of chemistry and for both recitation and laboratory instruction. The award includes a gift certificate of $100 to the NYU bookstore.
